Date night at home beyond movie night
Looking for a date night idea at home that isn’t another movie? Try an online escape room. A laptop hooked up to the TV shows the mystery, each of you holds your own clues on your phone, and you have to talk it through to open each door. After Hours at the Museum is for 1 to 4 players, takes 1.5 to 2 hours, and the first room is free, with no account and no credit card. With two players, each of you takes two roles, so there are more documents to piece together.

Why an escape room works so well for two
In After Hours at the Museum, neither of you has the whole picture. You read an inventory while your partner holds the floor plan, and the answer clicks when you realize your documents are about the same object. You’re on the same team, you talk a lot, and the clock adds just enough pressure.

1. A board game built for two
Some games are designed for two players and don’t need a crowd: 7 Wonders Duel, Jaipur or Patchwork if you like going head to head, Codenames Duo if you’d rather work together. A game takes about half an hour, so you can play two or three and save the rematch for next week.
2. Cook something neither of you has made
Pick a dish from a country you’ve never been to, one neither of you has ever cooked, and shop for it together. Or split the menu: one of you makes the appetizer, the other the dessert, and each course stays a surprise until it hits the table.
3. A quiz about each other
Each of you writes about twenty questions about yourself: your first concert, the food you hated as a kid, the city you’d love to live in. Take turns asking, one point per right answer. Even after years together, there are surprises.
4. A movie, then a real debate
Each of you suggests a movie the other hasn’t seen, and a coin toss decides. Before you hit play, agree on three questions for the end: was the ending fair, which character would you be, what would you change. The movie turns into a conversation instead of two people on their phones at opposite ends of the couch.
5. A co-op video game
If you have a console or a PC, two-player co-op games make great date nights: It Takes Two can only be played as a pair, and Overcooked 2 puts your teamwork to the test in a chaotic kitchen. In Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes, one of you defuses a bomb on screen while the other reads the manual without seeing the bomb.
How After Hours at the Museum plays with two
You’re locked inside a museum after closing. Marcel, the night guard, guides you over the security cameras, and someone else is prowling the rooms. You need to find the codes that open the doors, one room at a time.
- Setup. Open the game on the TV (a laptop plugged in over HDMI, or a recent phone mirrored to it). Each of you scans the QR code with your phone.
- Roles. There are four: the Archivist, the Egyptologist, the Technician and the Musician. With two players, the game hands them out in the order you join: the first player gets the Archivist and the Technician, the second the Egyptologist and the Musician. Each of you sees the documents for your two roles, and your partner doesn’t.
- The rooms. You search each set by flashlight from your phones. The vault dials and the piano keys are split between the two of you, so you have to act together.
- Help. Three difficulty levels (Visitor, Investigator, Curator) and three hints per puzzle, so you're never stuck for long. Every hint costs time on the clock.
- Length. 1.5 to 2 hours. The game stays saved for 30 days if you’d rather split it over two nights.
Long-distance couples can play the same way, each at home: remote mode sends the videos to both screens at once, and you talk over a video call.
As for the price, the first room is free for both of you. After that, one person buys the game, €9.99 (launch price until October 31, then €12.99), once, and the other joins for free. Details are on the pricing page. Inviting another couple? The with friends page explains how to play with up to four.
Frequently asked questions
Does an online escape room really work with just two people?
Yes. After Hours at the Museum is for 1 to 4 players. With two, each of you gets two of the four roles and their documents, which the other person can't see: you have to describe them to each other to make progress.
How much does an escape room date night at home cost?
The first room is free, with no account and no credit card. After that, one of you buys the game, €9.99 (launch price until October 31, then €12.99), and the other joins for free.
Do we need a console or any special gear?
No. A laptop connected to the TV (or a recent phone mirrored to it) and one phone each, with an up-to-date browser. The game runs in the browser, nothing to install.
How long does it take?
1.5 to 2 hours. If the night runs short, the game stays saved for 30 days and you can pick it up another evening.
What if we don't live together?
Choose "Play remotely" at launch: each of you sees the videos on your own screen, keeps your clues on your phone, and you talk over a video call.
