How much does an escape room cost? At a venue in the US, most groups pay somewhere between $28 and $50 per person for a game of about an hour, and closer to the top of that range when only two of you play. At home, a printable kit costs around $20 for the whole group, a boxed escape game around $15, and an online escape game ranges from a free first room to about $30 per team. Here is the detail, with prices checked in 2026.
| Format | Price found | Who pays? | Length |
|---|---|---|---|
| Escape room venue | $28 to $38 per person at one chain, a $44.99 median across one booking platform | Each player (cheaper per head in bigger groups) | About 1 hour |
| Printable kit | About $20 to $22 per game | The whole group | About 1 hour, plus setup |
| Boxed game (EXIT, Unlock!) | From about $15 a box | The whole group | 45 minutes to 1.5 hours per game |
| Online escape game | Free first room to about $30 per team | The team or the host | 1 to 2.5 hours |

Escape room prices per person
Breakout Games, a US chain, puts typical prices at $28 to $38 per person in a July 2026 article. The booking platform Morty looked at a year of US bookings (October 2025 to October 2026) and found a median of $44.99 per person before tax and fees, with most bookings between $40 and $49.99.
The price per person drops as the group grows, because the venue is really selling the room for the hour. Morty's medians by group size:
| Group size | Median price per person |
|---|---|
| 2 players | $48.00 |
| 3 to 4 players | $43.97 |
| 5 to 6 players | $42.99 |
| 7 to 8 players | $42.00 |
What moves the price at a venue:
- The city: big cities cost more than smaller towns.
- The group size: the per-head price falls until the room is full.
- The time slot: some venues charge more on evenings and weekends.
- The room itself: newer, longer or more elaborate rooms often cost a few dollars more.
How much an escape room costs for a group
If you're hosting and want the total, multiply the per-person price by the head count. Breakout Games says groups of 4 to 8 usually pay $120 to $280 per room. Above seven or eight players, you'll almost always need two rooms at the same time, which doubles the bill.

Escape games at home: printable kits and boxed games
A printable kit is the cheapest option for a group. Escape Kit lists its kits at about $22 whatever the group size, and compares that with an average of $84 to $110 for a classic room for 3 to 5 players. You download, print, hide the pieces, and everyone plays for that one price. Count on paper, ink and half an hour of setup.
A boxed game is played around the table. An EXIT box sells for around $15 ($14.95 at Walmart for The Sinister Mansion), but you can only play it once, because you write on, fold and tear the materials. Unlock! boxes hold three adventures and can be passed on to friends once you're done.

How much an online escape game costs
Online, you usually pay per team, not per player.
- For friends and families: a video mystery like Couch Clues cost $24.95 to $29.95 depending on team size in September 2026, for 2 to 5 players. Our Couch Clues review covers the game in detail.
- For companies: virtual escape rooms run by a live game master are sold per team, often with a quote. Ask what's included (the host, the number of players per team, the length) before you compare.
On a budget, the big plus of online games is that the price doesn't climb with every extra guest, and you can play from different homes on a video call.
Escape & Chill (we make it)
We make Escape & Chill, an online escape game played on the big screen (a computer connected to the TV), with a phone for each player to search the room and get their own clues. The first game, After Hours at the Museum, is for 1 to 4 players, takes 1.5 to 2 hours, and you can pause whenever you like.
As for the price, the first room is free, with no account and no credit card. After that, the person who creates the game pays €9.99 (launch price until October 31, then €12.99) once, and the other players pay nothing. You can start the game you bought as many times as you like, for example for a second team the same night. Everything is on the pricing page.
How to pay less for an escape room
- At a venue, go with 4 or 5 people: that's usually where the price per person bottoms out without the room feeling crowded.
- Pick a weekday if the venue prices its time slots differently.
- For a big group, a game at home costs the same for 4 as for 8, since you pay for the game, not for each player.
- Try before you buy when you can: a free room or a short first game tells you quickly whether your group likes the format.
